What we do

Electrical services for Norwich homes

Domestic electrical work is where Acorn started, and it still sits behind almost everything else we do. Phillip is Part P and 18th Edition qualified, and every circuit we install or alter is tested and certified to current regulations before we leave.

No job is too small and none is too large: a plug fitted or a socket moved, through to a consumer unit upgrade or a complete rewire. If what you need isn't listed below, it's almost certainly still something we do. Just call and ask.

01

Rewires & consumer units

Full and partial rewires and consumer unit upgrades, planned around a lived-in home and certified on completion.

  • An older property with dated or deteriorating wiring
  • A fuse box with no RCD protection
  • Renovation work that opens up walls and floors
02

New Sockets

Additional and replacement socket outlets, USB points and dedicated circuits, chased in and made good.

  • Only one or two outlets in a room that now needs six
  • Extension leads running under rugs or behind furniture
  • A kitchen refit that needs appliance and worktop outlets set out to a plan
03

Socket & Switch Relocation

Outlets and switches moved, raised, lowered or turned into a tidier layout after a room changes.

  • New kitchen units landing on top of existing outlets
  • Sockets stranded behind a wardrobe, bed or sofa
  • Light switches on the wrong side of a re-hung door
04

Exterior Sockets

IP-rated external outlets, garage and workshop supplies, correctly protected and certified.

  • Garden power for mowers, hedge trimmers and pressure washers
  • Patio and decking outlets for lighting, heaters and speakers
  • A supply to a detached garage, workshop or garden office
05

Interior Lighting

Downlights, pendants, wall lights, under-cabinet strips and dimming, planned as layers, not a single ceiling rose.

  • A room that only has a single central pendant
  • Kitchens where you work in your own shadow at the worktop
  • Replacing failed or yellowing halogen downlights with LED
06

Exterior Lighting

Driveway, path, garden and security lighting, correctly rated, controlled and protected.

  • A dark front path or unlit driveway
  • Security lighting that currently triggers on every passing cat
  • Lighting a patio or decking area for evening use
07

Smoke Alarms

Mains-powered interlinked smoke, heat and CO detection, correctly sited, tested and certified.

  • Replacing alarms at the end of their life, usually around ten years
  • Upgrading from battery-only detection to a mains interlinked system
  • Bringing a rental property in line with detection requirements
08

Appliance Installation

Electric cookers, ovens, hobs and integrated appliances wired to a suitable circuit with proper isolation.

  • A new electric cooker, oven or hob to connect
  • Upgrading from gas to an induction or ceramic hob
  • Integrated appliances going into a new or refitted kitchen
09

Fault Finding

Systematic diagnosis of tripping, dead circuits and intermittent faults, with the cause explained before repair.

  • An RCD that trips intermittently with no obvious trigger
  • A circuit breaker that won't reset
  • Sockets or lights dead on part of a circuit

Local expertise

An electrician who knows Norwich homes

Norwich housing stock varies enormously street to street. A Victorian terrace off Unthank Road, a 1930s semi in Thorpe St Andrew and a new-build in Queen's Hills each present a completely different problem when you want power or light somewhere new: solid brick, lath and plaster, or dot-and-dab with a service void behind it. Working in Norfolk homes every week means we usually know what's behind the wall before the first hole.

We take care of the whole job

Planning, ordering, creation and completion, all handled by Acorn, with one point of contact from the first visit to the final sign-off.

  1. 01

    Planning

We visit, listen and talk through the options that suit your home and budget, then confirm everything in a free, written quote. Projects over £500 take a 50% deposit, with the balance on completion.

  2. 02

    Ordering

We source and order the materials, units and fittings, and arrange deliveries around the programme, so you're never left chasing suppliers. Already chosen your own? We're happy to fit them.

  3. 03

    Creation

The work itself, carried out carefully and tidily by one team for the electrics, fitting and finishing. You'll know who is coming and what's happening each day.

  4. 04

    Completion

Electrical work tested and certified, every detail checked, and the space cleaned and handed back only when you're happy. Afterwards, you'll still speak to the same person who did the job.

Reviews

Trusted across Norfolk

Verified Google reviews from homeowners we've worked for.

“Phill has just come and completed 5 weeks work for us, in that time taking a complete shell to a stunning new bathroom, a revamped utility area and also fitted a new consumer unit for all our electrics, along with other jobs along the way. We can't recommend him highly enough - Phill took time to make sure of what we wanted, updating us regularly on the plan of works and thinking about all the big and small details to make sure things serve us well for many years to come. Phill is reliable, professional and friendly and will make sure things are finished just as you want. We have booked to have more work done very soon.”

Bathroom, utility and consumer unit

“We hired Acorn Electrical & Home Improvements to carry out some small building works at our barn conversion. Phillip and the team were punctual, diligent and professional over the 2-week project, even when faced with some nasty surprises from an old building. Super happy with the result, and we would have no hesitation in recommending them. We will be asking Phillip to quote for another project very soon.”

Carl West

Barn conversion building works

“Phil has done several different jobs for us over the last week. He replaced a wobbly gate post, designed and fitted a picket fence around a new flower bed, replaced the rotting pieces of wood in a tall fence having taken it to bits, replaced an outdoor electrical socket, and noticed some guttering was not working then fixed it. The main job he came to do was to re-clad 2 sides of a large shed with timber. He has great communication skills so we knew what to expect at all times, and he made sure we were happy at every stage. He came when he said he would, and actually finished the job ahead of schedule. He's friendly, trustworthy and easy to have around, and we have already booked him for another job before Christmas!”

Often, yes. It depends what else is on the circuit and how it's protected. We check the existing installation first. If adding load isn't sensible, we'll tell you what a dedicated circuit would involve instead.

Sometimes. Where a wall chase is needed the cable is run in a permitted zone, protected, and the chase is filled and made good. We'll explain the route before we start so there are no surprises.

Usually. If the existing cable has enough slack or can be safely extended in an accessible position, the move is straightforward. Where it can't be, we'll quote for a clean re-run rather than bury a joint somewhere it shouldn't be.

We fill and make good, which normally leaves a surface ready for decoration. If a large area is disturbed on a lath-and-plaster wall, we'll flag that before starting.

Sometimes, if the circuit has capacity and appropriate RCD protection. For anything more than occasional garden tool use (a workshop, for example), a dedicated supply is the better long-term answer.

Armoured cable to an outbuilding is buried at a sufficient depth with warning tape above it and mechanical protection where required. We'll agree the route with you before any digging.

Fewer than most people expect. Spacing depends on ceiling height, beam angle and what the room is for. We'd rather use six well-placed fittings with a dimmer than twelve at full output.

Cut-outs are neat and sized to the fitting, so the trim covers the opening. Where joists or existing services get in the way we adjust positions on site, which is why we set out before cutting.
